kate banazi and ryan mcgoldrick of rye. were introduced through localdesign. the two have similar ideologies on re-use, distortion and the manipulation of substrate and light and decided to work together to create an item that will be shown during milan design week 2017.
the concept of the piece was to create a collaboration of two halves, where the juxtaposition of two practices and personalities meet whilst not compromising our individual voices. for kate, this was an extension of her hand silkscreen printed perspex and paper artwork which reference identity, interlocking shapes, relationships and shadows cast. for ryan, it was equally the process behind the manipulation and control of light, density and reflection whilst building relationships and mentorships within a new design community. we both agreed that we wanted to keep everything local - australia has some of the most talented hands and minds and this was a project in a new area for both of us. We felt it important to support local industry, but also more comfortable having the ability to visit our manufacturers and create strong working relationship with our suppliers to ensure we would get a successful outcome . the australian design community has proven itself to be a strong and supportive network and we have been provided with a wealth of knowledge and advice.
the aluminium light shades were hand spun in mittagong and hand finished at the workshop facilities in the university of canberra. they were then given their anodised finish by the team at f!nk design in queanbeyan. precision metals of queanbeyan produced some of our assembly whilst the lighting component was machined and hand finished using the workshop facilities at the university of canberra.
a big thank you goes out to tom skeehan, of skeehan studio for his unwavering support, generous input and time spent helping with the project, the university of canberra for giving us a workspace and to bill shelley for his advice and support. designers alex fitzpatrick and chris hardy for their expert advice on lighting and electronics, ben cannon of f!nk design for his time in the early stages of the project and achieving a beautiful anodised finish for the shade. we would also like to thank emma elizabeth and tom fereday of local design for their long term support and generosity.
